for CA201: Early Lumiere Films [Aug. 4th, 2007|11:57 am]
whoa, talk about old. but of course, it was the first ever (or among the first at least) ever films produced. but i do have to say, though these were old, and had absolutely no dialogue whatsoever, there was something eerily interesting about these films. but maybe thats just another part of my own eccentricity. its honestly a bit funny  how the invention, or the ability  to record something made them feel powerful, no wait, powerful is too strong a word. Amused, thats the word i was looking for. the arrival of a train, workers leaving a factory, a childish quarrel, a baby's meal, the demolishing of a wall and that thing with the coke (i personally think they meant coal). these are extremely mundane things that we see day to day, well, most of them anyway. yet, back when these films were made, if you showed these event on. they do entice you, they do leave you watching, it does keep you from clicking the tiny red "pause" symbol below the youtube flashmedia player.

now, as i said, these films are really, really, old. not to mention primitive, but i speak this way because i have seen what movies are now, how they are made. how much they've evolved since then. yet, as i watch these films, i cannot help but realize that these, these films that i call primitive and old, are the "ancestors'' of the films we watch and adore today. without these mundane moments caught on film, the whole idea of motion pictures might never have been conceptualized.

if these were shown today, in all reality, the general public wouldn't necessarily take a liking to them, as mentioned in the above paragraph, most if not all of society today, has been so accustomed to the movies that we today see. if shown today, these would only appeal to a very certain  sect of percantage of society. say, those who really take interest in films of such age. or those, like us, students, who really do study movies like these.

for CA201: Information Revolutions [Aug. 1st, 2007|09:59 pm]
Mass Media: the Third Revolution.

now, this is the revolution where, in a manner of speaking, it all started. since this is where things really began to look up. yes, the radio, printing press and television had started to develop or take shape in the previous revolutions, but as the name of the information revolution states, this is where such thing were available to the masses. yes, these were extremely primitive to what we have now, but at the time, it was all they had, it was all they knew, and it was all they could access. personally, i think this is one the more important information revolutions, if not the most important one, primarily because since it's available to the masses, the masses can then be more informed. yes, news wasn't even conceptualized yet, but still. in was a stepping stone to doing such things. but it wasn't just a stepping stone to the news, no, it was a stepping stone to much more. on of those being the media we see today, obviously.

for CA201: War of the Worlds [Aug. 1st, 2007|09:37 pm]
back in 1938, the media wasn't as developed then as it is now but developed none the less. something we should definitely not overlook especially in the case of Orson Welles 1938 radio drama "The War of the Worlds". when i myself heard it, even i thought, that it was a bit too far-fetched to be really happening. but that might be because the year now is 2007 and not 1938, and thing have definitely developed since then. had i been alive during the broadcast of this radio drama, though skeptical, there would still be a voice in the back of my head
saying to me "well, you never know, what do you know right?". which i think is why it caused such a scare back then.
the general public, knew no better than to believe, since there wasn't really that much to know about space and the planets back then
now, if i knew no better, and someone said to me that the Martians were coming, and had such a good story to back up his claim
what would i care if it were true or not? my first concern would be to take action, to take up arms against these
extra-terrestrial invaders. now, though acclaimed, i think Orson Welles should have known better. he knew for a fact
that his listeners were more than avid fans of his shows, and how engrossed in his radio dramas they could be.
a radio drama of such intensity would undoubtedly have some listeners on the edge of their seats, but i don't think the thought of people
actually believing him actually crossed the mind of Mr. Welles

for CA201 [Jun. 30th, 2007|01:44 pm]

You turn on the TV, go to any channel, and you see commercials. Commercials that, always portray happy, complete, families. Families that are always smiling, always happy, are never irritated. Now this makes me wonder, why do they make families, the basic unit of society, seem so happy? Call me a pessimist if you will, but for now, humor me. Its common knowledge that, in households these days, it’s the children (youth) that has control of the remote, and more specifically, the television. They spend more time watching TV than studying or playing. And more often than not, they see these advertisements that show something that, in my opinion, isn’t always true. Yes, a family should be happy and complete, and though it’s hard to admit, it doesn’t always turn out that way. My concern regarding this matter is, young as they may be all this on television doesn’t necessarily prepare them for the extremely harsh realities of life. They are children, yes and should not be exposed to such things just yet. But for me, I it only heightens the fall that they must inevitably take one day. I for one can attest to that. When I little by little learned how harsh this life can be, it all came as a shock to me, because I wasn’t prepared for all this. Now, my point for saying all this, is that the media, should at least, in their own little way, help in the upbringing of the child especially in the matters stated above.
